Meet the Future of Santa Clara Softball: Hannah Russell

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara softball head coach Lisa Mize has signed six student-athletes to NLIs for the 2016 season. Hannah Russell, a catcher from Stockton, Calif., attended St. Mary's High School.

"My comfort level grew steadily each time I visited Santa Clara," said Russell. "I was interested in attending a university that would challenge me academically while giving me the opportunity to play the game that I love. The people I have met, my future teammates, and the campus are what ultimately influenced my decision. I could not be more excited for the future and all of the opportunities to come. I look forward to spending the next four years as a Bronco."

"Hannah has experienced success with both her high school and travel ball teams," said Mize. "She is a smart catcher that understands the game of softball. We are happy to welcome her to the Bronco family."

Through her junior year Russell hit .395 with a .971 OPS and 69 RBI. She had a .995 fielding percentage and a 72.9% caught stealing rate.

As a junior Russell hit .407 with 22 RBI and a .993 fielding percentage. She scored 23 runs to go with nine doubles and gunned down 11 of 14 base stealers. Her performance had her named TCAL First Team All-League for the second straight year.

As a sophomore she hit .432 with 32 RBI and 24 runs scored while hitting 16 doubles. She didn't make an error and caught 21 or 26 base stealers. She was named TCAL First Team All-League.

As a freshman Russell hit .333 with 15 RBI and had 22 runs scored and two doubles. She had a .989 fielding percentage.

Off the field she is a member of the St. Mary's Leadership Committee and St. Mary's International Outreach Club. She also took part in St. Mary's Green Machine, Pink Ladies Breast Cancer Awareness, and Empowering Young Women. He received academic all-honors in 2013, '14, and '15.

Russell enjoys spending time with family and friends, boating, swimming, and wake boarding.
