Softball Earns Split on Day Two of Bronco Classic

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – On day two of the Bronco Classic, Santa Clara softball split a pair of games on Saturday. The Broncos (2-6) fell 6-3 to Seattle (3-5) and beat Idaho State (2-7) 13-7.

"I told the girls that we were a team with some fight in us," said Santa Clara head coach Lisa Mize. "I'm really proud of everyone for how they responded and made a comeback in the second game. We had several players step up for us."

Game 1
After Seattle scored single runs in the fourth and fifth to tie the game, an error by the Broncos led to a run by the Redhawks. Rose Saenz reached on a dropped popped up and promptly swiped second. After a sac bunt she came in on a sacrifice fly to make it a 3-2 game.

Seattle added three runs in top of the seventh but the Broncos came right back in the bottom of the inning.

They were able to score to make it 6-3 with the trying run on base but a nice stop by the first baseman led to the final out of the game.

Micaela Vierra (1-3) went the distance but picked up the loss while allowing six runs, two earned, on seven hits with three walks and five strikeouts.

Ellie Fisher was 3-4 with a run scored and Kelsie Barnard was 2-3 with an RBI.

Andie Larkins (2-2) got the win in 6.0 innings. She allowed two unearned runs on five hits with a walk and three strikeouts.

Izzy Geronimo led the offense with a pair of RBI and Rose Saenz scored a pair of runs.

The Broncos were able to jump out to an early lead in the home half of the first. An error allowed the first run to come in and Kelsie Barnard's singled up the middle made it 2-0 Santa Clara.

Game 2
In the top of the second Idaho State put up a six-spot to take control but the Broncos had an answer. In the bottom of the frame Santa Clara scored three times to make it 7-6.

After a two-out error brought in the tying run in the bottom of the third, Casandra Padilla blasted a home run over the fence in left to give Santa Clara a 10-7 lead.

Padilla led the Bronco offense with three hits, a home run, three runs scored, and five RBI.

Geenamarie Bonilla knocked in three runs and Ellie Fisher scored three.

After falling behind 1-0 in the first, Santa Clara came back with three runs in the bottom of the frame. The big hit was a two-out single to right center that knocked in a pair of runs.

McCall James (2-0) struggled in the start. She lasted just 1.1 innings and allowed seven runs, three earned, on six hits with three walks.

Micaela Vierra (2-3) got the win in 5.0 innings out of the bullpen.

Mariah Mulcahy (0-1) lasted just 2.0 innings in her start. She allowed six runs, five earned, on five hits with three walks.

Ashlyn Ames (0-4) got the loss by allowing three runs in 3.0 innings. She struck out two and walked two.

Kacie Burnett was 3-5 with two runs scored and five Bengals had an RBI each.

Santa Clara wraps up the Bronco classic tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. vs. CSU Fullerton.
