SANTA CLARA, Calif. – On the final day of the regular season, Santa Clara softball beat Saint Mary's 1-0 in game one but fell 2-0 in the finale on Saturday afternoon.
Prior to the game Casandra Padilla and Chiara Biagini were honored for senior day.
By taking two of three from Saint Mary's, Santa Clara played its best softball of the season to send the Broncos into the offseason on a high note.
"This weekend we played the kind of softball we're capable of," Santa Clara head coach Lisa Mize said. "We're a young team and everything came together this weekend for us. Hopefully we'll be able to use that as a jumping off point for next year."
Game 1
McCall James (6-18) tossed her second straight shutout to push her scoreless streak to 14 innings. She allowed six hits and punched out two.
"McCall was great again today," Mize said. "She continued to throw strikes and make good pitches. She was able to keep Saint Mary's from getting the big hit and locked it down in tight situations."
Santa Clara (10-40, 5-9 WCC) scored the only run of the game in the first. Ellie Fisher used her speed to lead off with an infield single and swiped second. Justine Garner smacked a two-out double to left-center to knock in the run.
Fisher and Morgan Modesto both picked up two hits for the Broncos and three others had one hit each.
Lujane Mussadi (8-12) pitched 5 innings while allowing just one run but still got the loss. She surrendered six hits with two strikeouts.
Saint Mary's (19-27-1, 6-8 WCC) best scoring chance came in the fourth when they got their first two batters on via singles. They would load the bases with two down but James got out of the jam to extend her scoreless streak.
The Gaels put two runners on in the seventh but couldn't come through with a two-out hit.
Erica Musgrave picked up a double and Hailey Sparacino had a pair of hits to lead the Saint Mary's offense.
Game 2
Saint Mary's (20-27-1, 7-8 WCC) ended James' scoreless streak with two down in the fifth to take a 2-0 lead. Monica Reichhardt hit a soft liner into left with runners on second and third to break the stalemate.
James (6-19) got the loss despite pitching well. She allowed two runs on six hits with two walks and a strikeout in her third straight complete game.
Katie Moss (12-13) pitched a complete game to collect the win. She allowed five hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
Casandra Padilla and Gianetta France had doubles to lead the Bronco offense while three others picked up singles.
"We just couldn't come up with the timely hit," Mize said. "We played well and had some good at-bats but just couldn't string them together. Overall I'm really proud of the team this weekend."
The Broncos (10-41, 5-10 WCC) put the tying run in scoring position with two down in the bottom of the sixth but a pair of pop outs ended the frame with the Gaels still on top.
Santa Clara was able to load the bases with no one out in the bottom of the third to set up the first scoring chance of the game. A shallow fly ball turned into a double play when a runner was gunned down at the plate and Saint Mary's escaped the jam without a run coming across.
