Jan. 23, 2003

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's water polo squad starts its season against Sonoma State on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Leavey Pool, part of a tripleheader in collegiate water polo action. The Broncos will return to the pool at 2 p.m. for a match against UC Santa Cruz. The Seawolves and the Slugs will square off at 12:30 p.m. Admission is free.

"The team is really excited to start play this weekend," said first year head coach Keith Wilbur. "They have been working really hard in practice and they seem to be gelling well in the pool. We are ready to see some competition and put our hard work to the test."

The Broncos hope to have another successful season as they wrapped up last year with a 21-15 record, the most wins the program has seen in its four-year varsity history. The Broncos also placed fourth at the WWWPA Tournament, their highest finish.

Seniors Kelley Mays, Elizabeth Glotzbach and Becky Hong led the Broncos last season in scoring with a combined 179 goals.

Junior net minder Anne Ginotti recorded 220 saves and a 7.97 goals against average.

Sonoma State is a club team and last season the Broncos defeated the Seawolves 17-6. The UC Santa Cruz Slugs, currently ranked fourth nationally, ended their season with an 11-30 record, while placing 4th at the Division III Collegiate Water Polo Association Championships.
