March 23, 2003

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's water polo team defeated McAlaster 22-2 at the Claremont tournament this morning. The Broncos closed weekend action with a close loss to host Claremont 10-9 and evens their overall record to 11-11.

Kelley Mays and Kathleen Hamm scored four goals each to lead the Broncos against McAlaster. Allison Stover added three, while two each were scored by Elizabeth Glotzbach, Kelley Rauenbuehler, Bryn Asher and Alanna Simpkins. Becky Hong, Katy Shumm and Amanda Ginn added one tally apiece to round out the Bronco scoring.

Claremont, who is ranked third in the Division III standings, jumped out on Santa Clara early, creating a 4-1 lead. Despite the slow start, the Broncos battled back through the entire game and forced the victory to be decided in the final 15 seconds of the match.

Down by two as the clock wound down, Mays scored a four-meter goal to pull the Broncos close. Glotzbach followed with a steal, but Hong's shot, which would have sent the game into overtime, was just barely tipped by the goalie and sent out at the buzzer.

Anne Ginotti and Alexandra Dalmau shared time in the cage for both contests, with Ginotti recording five blocks in the second half of the Claremont contest.

Santa Clara will have a very busy spring break, with eight road matches in a five-day stretch. The Broncos will start with a visit to Pomona on Tuesday for a 5 p.m. contest, and follow with a doubleheader on Wednesday, taking on CS San Bernardino at 10 a.m. and La Verne at noon. The Broncos will visit Occidental for a 5 p.m. match on Thursday before participating in the LMU Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
