Water Polo Falls to Pomona in Overtime

March 25, 2003

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's water polo team dropped a close overtime game to Pomona-Pitzer 11-10 this evening in Claremont. The Broncos' overall record moves to 11-12.

Santa Clara held an 8-7 lead heading into the final 15 seconds of the match. Pomona scored with 13 seconds on the clock, but the Broncos were able to counter, for another one-goal lead with three seconds remaining. The Sagahens tied it at the buzzer to send into overtime, where they scored twice for the victory.

Freshman Kathleen Hamm led the Broncos with four goals. Senior Elizabeth Glotzbach added two, while Katy Shumm, Kelley Mays, Becky Hong and Alanna Simpkins added one tally apiece.

Anne Ginotti played the entire match in goal.

"It was a back-and-forth game the entire time," SCU head coach Keith Wilbur said. "It's rough to lose those close games, but hopefully we will learn as a team and get better as the week progresses."

Santa Clara is in the midst a very busy spring break, with seven road matches in a five-day stretch. The Broncos continue action with a doubleheader on Wednesday, taking on CS San Bernardino at 10 a.m. and La Verne at noon. The Broncos will visit Occidental for a 5 p.m. match on Thursday before participating in the LMU Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
