Mays Scores 12 Goals in Two Bronco Victories

March 26, 2003

SAN BERNARDINO & LA VERNE, Calif. - Senior Kelley Mays scored eight goals to lead the Santa Clara University women's water polo team to a 10-4 victory over CS San Bernardino this morning at the CSUSB Swim Complex. Mays added four goals in a 9-3 win at La Verne later in the afternoon. Santa Clara improves to 13-12 on the season with the victories.

Mays hit nearly all of her goals on well-timed lobs from six and seven meters out just beyond the reach of Coyotes' All-America goalie Amanda Wells.

"They're a good team, so that shows we played a solid game and bounced back well from yesterday's match," SCU head coach Keith Wilbur said. "They ran a defense that dropped off our players often, and that left Kelley open for a lot of shots. She took advantage offensively."

Wilbur also credited Becky Hong's defensive effort, as she guarded CSSB's whole set the entire game and "shut her down."

Sophomore Katy Shumm added the Broncos' other two goals, while junior Anne Ginotti guarded the cage and recorded nine saves.

The Coyotes broke on top in the first period, leading 2-0 on goals by Taryn Harp and Jamie Tiller before Mays responded with a lob goal for a 2-1 Coyotes lead after one quarter. CSUSB led 4-3 with 2:49 left in the second quarter on goals by Liz Nicks and Ashleah Morrison. Mays scored to even the match and Shumm put the Broncos ahead for the first time at 5-4, sending a shot into the net with one second left before halftime.

The second half was all Santa Clara as they outscored the Coyotes 5-0. Ginotti turned away numerous Coyotes' scoring opportunities in the final 14 minutes.

Against La Verne, Kathleen Hamm added two goals, while Bryn Asher, Shumm and Hong added one tally apiece. Ginotti recorded six blocks.

Santa Clara is in the midst a very busy spring break, with seven road matches in a five-day stretch. The Broncos will visit Occidental for a 5 p.m. match on Thursday before participating in the LMU Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
