HAYWARD, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's water polo team split decisions in first-day action at the CS Hayward Tournament, defeating La Verne 8-7 while losing a defensive battle against Michigan State 5-4.
Santa Clara had problems netting goals against Michigan State in a heavily defensive game. Four Santa Clarans netted one goal apiece: Becky Hong, Katie Shumm, Elizabeth Glotzbach and Kathleen Hamm.
Alexandra Dalmau and Anne Ginotti split time in the cage and each recorded two saves. "We played fairly well overall but just couldn't put the ball away. We had plenty of opportunities but our shots were just not going," SCU head coach Keith Wilbur said.
The afternoon provided Santa Clara with an opportunity to redeem itself, and it did, knocking off La Verne 8-7. Santa Clara opened the game with a 3-0 deficit, and was down 7-5 heading into the final quarter. The Broncos battled back to win the game, as they outscored La Verne 3-0 in the fourth period. Senior Kelly Mays scored with just 30 seconds remaining for the go-ahead goal, and then stole the ball on La Verne's last possession to seal the victory.
Freshman Bryn Asher scored three times to lead the Broncos, while Hong and Hamm added two apiece for the rest of Santa Clara's goals.
Dalmau and Ginotti again each split time in the cage. Ginotti notched two saves while Dalmau recorded four.
The Broncos return to action on Sunday, taking on Claremont at 9 a.m. and host CS Hayward later on in the afternoon.
