Women's Water Polo Tops Chapman 5-4

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's water polo team defeated Chapman 5-4 in continuing action at the 2003 Western Women's Water Polo Association Championships, hosted by CS Bakersfield at the Hillman Aquatic Center.

Santa Clara, seeded fifth in this weekend's tournament, improves to 16-20 on the season, while the Panthers fall to 5-19.

The Broncos will play again in an elimination match this afternoon, against CS Hayward at 3 p.m.

Seniors Becky Hong and Kelley Mays scored two goals apiece to lead Santa Clara, while freshman Bryn Asher added one. Junior Anne Ginotti recorded eight saves in the cage.

Santa Clara was down 3-2 at the half, but battled back for the victory.

"We started slow and came back at the end," SCU head coach Keith Wilbur said. "It was good to win a close game and stay alive in the tournament."

On Sunday, the seventh-place match will take place at 10 a.m., while the contest for fifth place will begin at 11:15 a.m. The third place team will be decided during a 12:30 p.m. match, and the title game will begin at 2 p.m.
