SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's water polo team defeated Cal State Hayward by a 16-5 score Sunday afternoon at the Leavey Pool on the Santa Clara campus.

The win was the second on the day for the Broncos who defeated Villanova earlier in the day by a 13-8 score, as did Cal State Hayward who notched a narrow 8-7 win over the Wildcats.

Santa Clara (7-7) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead but fell behind at the 2:18 mark of the first quarter when Cal State Hayward (3-8) took a 2-1 lead. From there it was all Santa Clara who went on 5-0 scoring run and eventually led 8-3 at the end of the first half.

The second half was very similar to the first in that the Broncos outscored the Pioneers 8-2, for the eventual 16-5 final score.

Santa Clara got six goals from Kelley Mays who scored twice in the first, second and fourth quarters. Becky Hong, who tallied six goals of her own against Villanova, notched two more goals against the Pioneers.

The Broncos return to action next weekend at the Cal State Hayward tournament which takes place all day Saturday and Sunday, the 8th and 9th of March.
