Women’s Water Polo Drops a Pair Saturday to Ranked Foes

SAN DIEGO – The 17th-ranked Indiana Hoosiers built an early lead and then held on for a 7-4 victory over Santa Clara women's water polo during Saturday afternoon's action at the Triton Invitational, a two-day, 16-team tournament.

Elizabeth Anderson scored two goals, including a fourth-quarter tally that drew the Broncos (2-2) to within 6-4 with 4 minutes left, but Indiana's Candyce Schroeder, who had a game-high three scores, added an insurance marker with 2:07 left to go.

Cathy Cantoni and Susan Providenza also scored for the Broncos, who were knocked off 20-2 by USC, the No. 2-ranked team in the nation, Saturday morning in the team's opening game of the tournament, which is being held at UC San Diego's Canyonview Aquatic Center.

Santa Clara will play an early-season rematch with No. 25 Cal State East Bay Sunday. The Broncos downed the Pioneers, 14-10, on the road last Saturday. The teams will meet at 9:20 a.m.
