Women’s Water Polo Falls Short to No. 18 San Diego State

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Santa Clara women's water polo team fell short against Golden Coast Conference (GCC) leader No. 18 San Diego State Friday afternoon by a score of 9-3.

The Broncos (8-12, 1-2) rallied from an early three-goal deficit to within 4-3 on a goal by Susan Providenza with 6:49 left in the third period, but Caroline Israels scored one of her team-high three goals for the Aztecs (12-13, 4-0) less than two minutes later.

SDSU added a pair of goals in the final 1:30 of the third and the Broncos were not able to find their offensive rhythm the rest of the way.

"I think we played really good defensively for most of the game," said head coach Keith Wilbur. "I think we need to have a more active offense where all six players are a threat which is key for us. Once our offense stopped putting goals on the board that really affected us in the third quarter. I think the game was a lot closer than the score indicates, but we have to put more goals on the board and play better defense all four quarters."

Hannah Buck and Elle Surber also scored for the Broncos, while Elizabeth Anderson earned four ejections and goalkeeper Sydni Estrella picked up eight saves and two steals.

Santa Clara remain at home, facing conference opponent Cal Baptist on Saturday at noon.
