SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Santa Clara women’s water polo team ended its weekend at the Tina Finali Invitational with a final record of 2-2 after beating tournament host Cal Lutheran Sunday morning 12-5 and losing a close contest to Pomona-Pitzer 7-6.
Santa Clara’s overall record moves to 4-7 after a long stretch on the road.
Elle Surber continued her hot streak Sunday morning, scoring three goals against Cal Lutheran. The Broncos came out strong in the first quarter with three goals while keeping the Regals to just one. After taking a 5-2 lead into halftime, Santa Clara sealed the win with five more goals in the third and took the win with a final score of 12-5.
The Broncos held a 5-3 lead over Pomona-Pitzer at halftime in Sunday’s second contest, but the Sagehens overcame Santa Clara’s defense in the second half. SCU was outscored 4-1 in the second half, and the game ended with a final score of 7-6 in favor of Pomona-Pitzer.
Surber led the Broncos this weekend with 11 goals. Elizabeth Anderson provided eight goals and 10 earned ejections. Junior goalkeeper Francesca Puccinelli started all four games in the net for Santa Clara and saved 38 shots.
Next, SCU will travel to UC Davis to play in the Aggie Shootout on March 5. Their first home game of the season takes place on March 12.
