Women’s Water Polo Falls 9-5 at No. 10 San Jose State

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Santa Clara women's water polo team was unable to solve the offensive prowess of San Jose State's Rae Lekness in Friday's nonconference contest.

Lekness scored a season-high six goals to lead the 10th-ranked Spartans (7-6) to a 9-5 victory.

Elle Surber scored a team-high three goals and Francesca Puccinelli went the distance in net, making 11 saves for the Broncos (2-5).

Surber's second goal cut the San Jose State lead to 5-3 at the 1:05 mark of the second quarter, but just more than 2 minutes later Lekness scored a pair of goals in a 44-second span to build a four-score cushion.

Hannah Buck and Blair Akerland also scored for the Broncos who were unable to take advantage of 11 ejections for the Spartans, scoring just twice on the power play.

Santa Clara is back in action next weekend when it travels to Southern California to play in the Cal Lutheran Tournament and Tina Finali Invitational.
