LOMPOC, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's golf team began its 2002 Spring season at the UC Santa Barbara Bite/Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Tournament at the par-72, 6,603 yard La Purisima Golf Course in Lompoc, Calif.

Matt Klenz fired the best two-round total of the day for the Broncos, ending the first two rounds with a score of 4-over par, 148. Klenz carded rounds of 73 and 75, finishing just one shot ahead of teammate Sandy Horacek who shot rounds of 74 and 75.

Despite finishing second behind Klenz, it was Horacek who was the talk of the tournament after lacing a pitching wedge 130 yards into the hole for the first ace of his career.

"Sandy said he knew it was in from the moment he hit it," said head coach John Kennaday, "but it took me just a few yards further to think it had a chance. I really though it had a chance when it was still on its way up, and as it turns out it really did as it landed just past the hole and spun back into the cup. He just hit a pure and perfect shot."

Kevin Bric finished the day with rounds of 77 and 80, while Chris DeMartini fired a 78 in round two following an opening round of 80. Kevin Edwards finished the Bronco scoring with rounds of 77 and 85 to give the Broncos a team score of 609.

San Diego State leads the tournament following day one after shooting 4-under par, 572 as a team. Fresno State and the top-ranked team in Division II, Cal State Bakersfield, sit in a tie for second place after day-one, 12 shots behind the Aztecs.

Santa Clara will conclude its play at the UCSB Invitational Friday morning. "We are looking forward to tomorrow and having a chance to improve our scores over today's rounds," said Kennaday.

Following Tuesday's final round the Broncos will play in its second tournament of the Spring on Monday and Tuesday of next week when they participate in the Sacramento State Invitational.
