Men's Golf Shoots Third Lowest Round of Day in Final Round of Sac State Invite

RANCHO MURIETA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's golf team shot the third lowest team total of the day in the final round of the Sacramento State Invitational Tuesday morning at the Ranchero Murietta Country Club.

The Broncos fired a 300 as a team, only being edged out by UC Riverside and Cal State Stanislaus for the best scores of the day. The three-day total of 913 placed Santa Clara in eighth place, just seven shots out of fifth place.

UC Riverside won the tournament with a total of 871, followed closely behind by Cal State Stanislaus and Cal State Bakersfield with scores of 875 and 883, respectively.

Senior Sandy Horacek was the top finisher for the Broncos, ending the tournament in a tie for 15th place with a three-round total of 6-over par, 222. Horacek was one of only four golfers to finish the final round under par, shooting a 1-under round of 71.

Matt Klenz finished in a tie for 24th place with a score of 226, while Jonathan Edwards finished tied for 42nd with a score of 233. Kevin Bric and Chris DeMartini posted scores of 236 and 239, respectively over the two-day, three-round event.

Brenden Steele of UC Riverside earned the medalist honors and was the only competitor to finish under-par (-1) for the tournament. Steele shot rounds of 68, 75 and 72 for a total of 215, edging Dan Warburton of Cal State Bakersfield by one stroke. Bill Sutt and Mark Lawless of Cal State Stanislaus, Joe Lanza of Saint Mary's and Cameron Nelson of UC Riverside tied for third with scores of 217.

Santa Clara will take a break from competition next week to concentrate on finals, but will return to action March 25-26 in Banning, Calif., as they participate in the UC Irvine Invitational.
