SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's golf team finished day one of the 56th-Annual Western Intercollegiate Golf Tournament in 16th place at the Pasatiempo Golf Course in Santa Cruz, Calif.
The University of Washington was the only team to post under-par team scores in both the morning and afternoon rounds and San Jose State University's Isaac Weintraub had the best 36-hole performance of his college career to highlight the first day's play at the 56th annual Western Intercollegiate men's golf tournament.
Washington posted team scores of 276 and 270 for a 14-under par 546 on the par 70, 6,445-yard Pasatiempo Golf Course. The Huskies, with three golfers among the top five individuals in the 88-player field, hold a near insurmountable 23-stroke lead heading into Tuesday's final 18 holes. Oregon, last year's team champion, is second at 569.
Weintraub, a lefthanded sophomore from Aptos, fired rounds of 66 and 67 for a 133 total. He holds a one-stroke lead over Washington's Conner Robbins, who opened with a 69 and finished with the day's low score of five-under 65. Brock McKenzie of Washington and Travis Hurst of Kansas are tied for fourth at 136.
Santa Clara freshman Matt Klenz sits in a tie for 12th place after the first two rounds after rounds of 71 and 70 that totaled up to a 1-over par score. Sandy Horacek started the day off well for the Broncos, firing an opening round 72, but a second round 78 left him at 10-over par and in a tie for 51st.
Jonathan Edwards, Chris DeMartini and Skye Skikos rounded out the Bronco participants, with Edwards carding a two-round total of 157, while DeMartini and Skikos ended up with scores of 160 and 177, respectively.
The third and final round will begin at 8 a.m. Tuesday morning at Pasatiempo Golf Course which is located just 25 miles south of Santa Clara. The course itself was ranked 77th by Golf Digest in their ranking of the 100 greatest courses and was designed by Alister Mackenzie who also designed Agusta National and Cypress Point Golf Courses.
