SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's golf team had a good weekend as head coach John Kennaday announced that senior captain Sandy Horacek was named the team's MVP while current assistant coach Aaron Oberholser won the Samsung Canadian PGA Championship on the Buy.Com tour.

Horacek participated in all 11 events thus far for Santa Clara and posted the lowest scoring average on the team at 74.6 for the year. He posted four top-15 finishes during the year, including a tie for second place at the UC Irvine Anteater Invitational where he lost on the first hole of a six-man playoff to teammate Matt Klenz. He recorded 53 consecutive competitive collegiate rounds in the 70's over the past two seasons, including 27 rounds this season.

Over the last two summers Horacek has qualified and competed in the U.S. Amateur Opens at the Baltusrol and East Lake Country Clubs. Last year at East Lake, he moved into the second round of the match play portion of the championship after defeating Atsushi Takase of Japan, 2 and 1. He will look to make a third straight appearance in the U.S. Amateur this summer.

Santa Clara men's golf assistant coach Aaron Oberholser took another step closer to a PGA Card Sunday with his first career win on the Buy.Com tour, winning the Samsung Canadian PGA Championship with a four-round total of 16-under par, 268.

Oberholser collected $81,000 for the victory and moved past Cliff Kresge to the top of the money list with $144,908. He becomes the 10th first-time winner in as many tournaments on the BUY.COM TOUR in 2002.

"That was a tremendous victory for Aaron," said Kennaday, who is also Oberholser's personal coach. "His hard work, perseverance and character played big roles in the win for him. We are so happy for him because he has been such an excellent example to our student-athletes over the last couple of years that it is nice to see it paying off for him."

The Samsung Canadian PGA Championship was previously won by the likes of Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino, Raymond Floyd and Lanny Wadkins, just to name a few. The tournament is the second oldest in Canada.
