Men's and Women's Golf Finish First Day of WCC Championships

MADERA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's and women's golf teams finished the first day of the West Coast Conference Championships Monday at the Riverbend Golf Course in Madera, Calif.

The first day consisted of two rounds for each team with the men sitting in fourth place and the women in fifth after day one.

The men were led by freshman Matt Klenz who fired rounds of 72 and 76 to finish the first day with a score of 4-over, 148, and in a tie for ninth place with the final round to go.

Kevin Bric is in a tie for 14th with a two-round total of 150, while Sandy Horacek and Jonathan Edwards each are tied for 21st with a total of 154. Chris DeMartini rounded out the Bronco scoring with a total after day one of 157, good enough for a tie for 33rd place.

The Bronco men finished the two rounds with scores of 300 and 305, and sit just 12 strokes back of San Francisco who is in second place. Leading the men's side after the first two rounds in four-time defending WCC Champion, Pepperdine, with a total on day one of 567.

On the women's side, the Broncos fired rounds of 346 and 347. Jessica Lamberty led the way for Santa Clara and sits in 16th place after rounds of 84 and 83. Courtney Dimpel-Composti is in a tie for 18th after rounds of 85 and 86.

Kelly Wendorff is in 22nd place, while Jennifer Taylor is in 23rd and Caitlyn McNary is currently 25th after two-round totals of 176, 179 and 195, respectively.

Pepperdine, who has won four of the last five WCC titles on the women's side, is in the lead after day one, putting together rounds of 298 and 293. San Francisco is in second place with a two-round total of 618, 20 strokes ahead of third place, Portland.

The third and final round for both the men and women will begin at 7 a.m. at the Riverbend Golf Course in Madera.
