SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara University golfer Sandy Horacek shot a four-under par 68 at the Druid Hills course moving him into 35th place and qualifying for the 64-man match play portion of the tournament.
After shooting a four-over par 74 at the East Lake course on Monday morning, Horacek was only four strokes out of the 64-man field that eluded the senior just one year earlier. He began the front nine very steadily, remaining at even par until a miscue at the fourth hole pushed him to one-over par. He got back to even par as he bounced right back with a birdie on the fifth hole. Horacek continued his good play after a friendly bounce back into the fairway on his drive at the par five seventh, then promptly knocked a two-iron to within 25-feet. After draining that eagle put on No. 7, Horacek birdied the ninth hole to finish his front nine at three-under par.
Horacek continued his steady play on the back nine with only one bogey and two birdies, both of which came on par-threes. The Santa Clara captain finished day two erasing his four-over par score from the day before and moved himself into a good position for seeding in the match play tournament.
"Everything feels pretty good right now," said Horacek, "I just need to go out there and play like I know I can. It will be challenging as match play is very different from medal play."
Horacek will have good support for the remainder of the tournament as his father is caddying for the 21 year-old, while his mother and girlfriend are following him around on the course. "I think my mother and girlfriend are more nervous than I am," said Horacek, "I saw them every once in a while hiding behind some trees and covering their eyes because they were so nervous for me."
Horacek will be informed of his opponent and tee-time for Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday evening after all the seeding and ties are determined.
The tournament will have 13 hours of live national coverage on ESPN and NBC beginning tomorrow. ESPN will air three hours per day from Wednesday through Friday, and NBC will carry two hours daily on Saturday and Sunday.
