LAS VEGAS - Santa Clara men's soccer won its final game at UNLV's Johann Memorial Classic, defeating a 10-man Cal State Fullerton squad, 2-1. Junior Satoshi "Yoshi" Chaffin scored the opening goal for the Broncos and delivered the assist on junior Carlos Delgadillo's game-winning goal in the 84th minute. Delgadillo and junior Valdemar Andersen, the Defensive Player of the Tournament, garnered All-Tournament Team accolades.

"Yoshi's goal was huge for us," head coach Cameron Rast said. "We told the guys that if we get off to a good start and are on our front foot, we're going to score goals. It set a great tone for us and ultimately that carried us through to the end."
With the score tied at one, Chaffin then set up Delgadillo to score his first goal of the season in the 84th minute. Chaffin beat a defender one-on-one again and played the ball across the face of the goal to Delgadillo at the far post who tapped it in. The San Jose native has tallied 15 goals for his career, six of which have been game-winners.

Cal State Fullerton's (1-3) Ricardo Covarrubias was assessed a yellow card at the 9:39 mark. He was then assessed another yellow card at 12:35 and sent off, forcing the Titans to play with 10 men the rest of the match. The physical nature of the match continued as senior Matt Steuer (30:45), senior James Huffer (42:23) and Andersen (81:06) all received yellow cards for the Broncos. Mitchell Bell was also assessed a yellow card for CSUF at 88:10.
"I think their player getting a red card threw us off," Rast said. "The game didn't change but we had a mindset that made it seem like it did. The other team changed their formation and the roles changed a bit but the game is still the same. We didn't adjust and sort that out until halftime."
Cal State Fullerton tied the match at one at the 37:46 mark from the penalty spot after a foul was called at the edge of the 18-yard box. Sophomore goalkeeper Dakota Havlick guessed correctly by diving to his right and even got a hand on the ball but Nicolo D'Amato's shot was too powerful and found the back of the net.
Scoring two goals and getting a win over a 2015 NCAA Tournament team will boost the team's confidence heading into the home opener on Sept. 10, according to Rast. The Broncos welcome the Anteaters of UC Irvine to Stevens Stadium on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. PT.
"Their coach, George Kuntz, does a great job with Fullerton and I'm sure he'll get them back on track," Rast said. "For us, we knew that this was an important game. Particularly after playing well but not getting a result on Friday. Sometimes that can affect the team's confidence. Getting off to a good start tonight really was crucial and the difference-maker in the end."
