Men’s Water Polo Loses at Cal Baptist in WWPA Tilt

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Santa Clara water polo fell behind early and was unable to keep pace with Cal Baptist, which downed the Broncos, 13-8, Friday in a Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) game.

Brent Teraoka and Jonathan Lotero scored three goals apiece for the 14th-ranked Lancers (18-8, 2-2) who won for the ninth time in their last 10 games behind a strong defense and efficient offense at Lancer Aquatic Center.

Ryan Werner scored a career-high tying three goals and Dane Estrella added two with a pair of assists for the Broncos (10-12, 2-2) who rallied in the fourth quarter.

Santa Clara, which had won five of seven entering the game, scored eight times in the second half, but was unable to overcome a cold start.

Back-to-back goals by Teraoka and Lotero in the final two minutes of the first half have the Lancers a 7-0 lead.

Werner and Estrella broke through with goals midway through the third period, but the Lancers led 10-2 at that point.

Patrick Collins started in net for the Broncos and posted three saves. The Lancers tallied their 13 goals on just 29 shot attempts.

Santa Clara went 3-for-12 with the man advantage and goaltender Joseph Moorman turned aside 14 shots for the Lancers in earning the victory.

The Broncos look to even their record on a brief two-game road trip. They travel up the coast Saturday to face Concordia in Irvine with the game set to start at 1:30 p.m.
