Libby Matson Tournament Central

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Santa Clara University softball team will play two games at the University of the Pacific's Libby Matson Tournament in Stockton this weekend.

Due to rainy forecasts and travel concerns with the tournament's participants, the Pacific softball team has changed the original schedule of the 2011 Libby Matson Tournament. Friday's contests have been moved as the tournament will now be held from Saturday until Monday, February 28. Santa Clara's scheduled game with San Jose State Saturday has been canceled.

"If our pitchers can keep us in the game, we should compete for wins against both San Jose State and Pacific," said Santa Clara Head Coach Lisa Mize, before learning that weather canceled the Broncos' scheduled Saturday game with SJSU. "Last week we played great defense, were aggressive at the plate, but just couldn't get the timely hits."

The Broncos (0-2; 0-0 PCSC) began the 2011 season last Sunday, dropping a pair of games to San Jose State (8-4; 0-0 WAC). The opener of that double-header was tied at 1-1 in the seventh before the Spartans pushed in the deciding run for a walk-off win.

"Our freshman pitcher, Jessica Turner, was really solid," Mize said of Turner's debut Sunday. "Her composure and whole demeanor is what we are looking for and what we need to take us to the next level."

With the added mound presence of Turner complementing a lineup that features proven hitters in All-Pacific Coast Softball Conference outfielders Briana Knight and Jackie Nicora and junior infielder Kristin Welsh, who hit a team-best .322 last season, the Broncos should be much improved in 2011.

No. 13 Oregon (10-1; 0-0 Pac-10) and Pacific (4-2; 0-0 Big West) promise to offer tough tests. Oregon went 36-21 last season and qualified for the NCAA tournament. Pacific won 24 games in 2010 and returns seven starters.
