DAVIS, Calif. – Santa Clara University and UC Davis played a tight game through five and a half innings, until the homestanding Aggies pushed in six runs in the bottom of sixth to come away with a 9-1 victory over SCU on Tuesday.

Due to rain in the Bay Area, the Broncos (4-11) have had nine games canceled or postponed over the past two weeks. Tuesday was the first time SCU batters had seen live pitching since March 19.

"We had a chance to win this game, but we need to stay strong and push a little harder towards the end," said Santa Clara head coach Lisa Mize. "Jenna (Fong) pitched well today, she went three full innings and then came back in; she did well. We were trying to get both her and Jessica Turner some work."

Jenna Fong started and allowed just three runs as the game went into the fifth with UCD up 3-1. Santa Clara received an RBI single from Kelly Scribner in the first inning. Seniors Jackie Nicora and Amanda Edmonson also provided hits for SCU.

UCD shortstop Elizabeth Santana went 3 for 3 and first baseman Kelly Harmon drove in three runs. The Aggies (14-12) got four quality innings from starter Alex Holmes, who won her eighth game of the season.

The Broncos will have a week and a half to prepare for their Pacific Coast Softball Conference opener at Cal State Bakersfield the weekend of April 8-10.

"We definitely want to incorporate live pitching in our practices over the next week," said Mize. "We have a real good chance to play well in conference, but we need to capitalize on our opportunities. Bakersfield will be a good series, we usually play them very tough."

The Broncos have added two games to its 2011 schedule in attempt to make up canceled games due to the weather, playing at Pacific Tuesday, April 12 at 7 p.m. and playing a doubleheader against Oregon State at home Thursday, April 14 beginning at 10 a.m.
