Libby Matson Tournament Central

STOCKTON, Calif. – Santa Clara freshman pitcher Jessica Turner held No. 13-ranked Oregon to one run, but the Ducks were able to come away with a 1-0 win over the Broncos in the final game of the Libby Matson Tournament in Stockton.

"It was a really good game, we played such good defense," said Santa Clara Head Coach Lisa Mize. "Four out of the seven innings we had opportunities to score. If we could have got that timely hit … one swing of the bat would have changed the game."

Santa Clara (0-4) received hits from center fielder Stephanie Fisher, first baseman Kelly Scribner and third baseman Kristin Welsh.

The game was scoreless into the bottom of the sixth, until Oregon (13-2) got on the board via a solo homerun from Kelsey Chambers. It was one of just seven hits allowed by Turner, who walked three and struck out one in six complete innings.

"We are going to use this game to build off of," said Mize, who is optimistic about the progress of her team's play moving forward. "Going into next weekend's games, there is no reason why we can't win each game. Today was a real positive for us, especially since Oregon was throwing one of their top pitchers."

The Ducks used junior Samantha Skillingstad, who will easily join the top-10 all-time pitching categories at Oregon for appearances, wins, complete games and shutouts by the time her career is over. She fanned 11 Sunday and the shutout was her second of the season.

The Broncos will return to action next week on the road at Colorado State's Invitational, Friday through Sunday, March 4-6.
