Santa Clara Wins at Its Own Softball Classic

Santa Clara 4, Albany 3

Briana Knight
drove a 1-2 pitch over the right field fence in the first inning, scoring Kelly Scribner and SCU led 2-0. After Albany manufactured a run in the top of the second with an RBI groundout, it was Scribner coming through with a two-out single in the third, scoring Jamie Wallis from second.

Knight followed with a double to center and SCU would lead 4-1. Knight upped her team-leading batting average to .417.

All four early runs for SCU came off Albany sophomore starter Allie Weiser (0-3).

An unearned run off Jessica Turner (1-5) got Albany within one, 4-3, in the top of the fifth. Eight of the Great Danes nine hits were singles and their only double was a ball that ricocheted off the SCU shortstop.

Turner was tested in the seventh. Trailing by a run, Albany's Gina Mason led off the inning with a single and with the tying run moved to second, Turner was able to induce the next three outs in order to seal the win. Turner struck out a season-high six.

Boise State 7, Santa Clara 0

Boise State received a stellar pitching performance from Crump (7-3), who held Santa Clara hitless through the first four innings. BSU scored twice in the first inning off SCU starter Jenna Fong (3-2) and two more times in the fifth.

Fong settled in nicely after the first inning, shutting down BSU in the second, third and fourth, but the SCU offense was put down in order until Knight singled to lead off the bottom of the fifth.

BSU – who has now won eight straight (a new school record) – got four RBI from Danville native Devon Bridges. Holly Bourke went 4 for 5 and Kellie Caplan added three hits. BSU totaled 14 hits but Fong stranded 11 runners.
