SAN JOSE, Calif. – Santa Clara University's softball team nearly beat host San Jose State Sunday afternoon in the first game of a double-header at SJSU Field. 

SCU senior Amanda Edmonson hit a game-tying double in the top of the seventh to even the game at 1-1 before the Spartans answered with two hits and a run in the bottom of the inning to come out with 2-1 win.

Santa Clara was shutout in Game Two, 8-0. It marked the first two games of the 2011 season for the Broncos (0-2). The Spartans (8-4) – who finished 34-25 last season – already had played a full weekend of softball in Tempe at last week's Kajikawa Classic hosted by Arizona State.

SCU true freshman pitcher Jessica Turner started and threw a complete game in the opener, then came on to work as a reliever in Game Two. Turner threw 8 1/3 innings of four-run softball in the two games.

Edmonson, Briana Knight, Jamie Wallis and Krista Jensen each doubled for SCU, accounting for four of the team's six hits on the afternoon. As a team the Broncos were 6 for 39 (.154 BA) spanning the two games.

Next up for Santa Clara is three games at the University of the Pacific's tournament in Stockton next weekend. The Broncos will play San Jose State again (Saturday, Feb. 26),  Oregon (Sunday, Feb. 27) and Pacific (Sunday, Feb. 27).
