Short-Handed Broncos Swept In Saturday Doubleheader

SARATOGA, Calif. - Santa Clara University's softball team dropped both games of a Saturday afternoon doubleheader with Pacific Coast Softball Conference rival University of San Diego by scores of 8-0 and 9-0 at West Valley College in Saratoga.

San Diego (21-14; 11-1 PCSC) won four straight over Santa Clara (6-23; 2-10 PCSC) during the weekend and the Toreros have now won 11 straight overall.

USD received a pair of shutout pitching performances, first a five-inning two-hit gem from Kaitlin Healy (9-4) in the opener, then a seven-strikeout two-hit effort from Jenny Lahitte (5-5) in Game Two. San Diego pitchers allowed just four runs during the four-game series and saw its offense supply 36 runs.

Santa Clara freshman Stephanie Fisher went 6 for 9 (.667 BA) and scored twice during the series. The Broncos have been playing without two of its star offensive players, junior OF Briana Knight, who was batting a league-best .442 before being sidelined with an injury last week and injured junior INF Kristin Welsh, who led the team with a .322 batting average last season.

Playing short-handed, Santa Clara was taking on a USD team that is enjoying one of its best seasons in school history. The Toreros are now 11-1 in PCSC play, already equaling their conference win-total from 2010. Jessica Tieszen went 6 for 12 (.500 BA) with 11 RBI in the series, while Lauren Tomey hit .615 (8 for 13) with three extra-base hits and seven RBI.

Celeste Soto hit a 3-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning of Game Two Saturday to end the series in walk-off fashion.
