BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Santa Clara University improved to 2-2 in Pacific Coast Softball Conference play, using Jenna Fong's complete-game shutout to beat Cal State Bakersfield 3-0 Sunday on the road.

Jamie Wallis hit a go-ahead solo homerun in the third inning and Jackie Nicora hit a two-RBI single in the sixth to give Fong some late insurance. Fong, who beat Bakersfield yesterday, won for the fifth time this season.

"We got some key outs at crucial times today, and we capitalized with timely hitting and played great defense." said Santa Clara head coach Lisa Mize. "(Fong) did a really good job with ball placement and mixing up her pitches. She kept them off balance with her changeup."

Santa Clara's (6-13; 2-2 PCSC) offense pounded out 26 hits, including six homers, en route to splitting four games against Cal State Bakersfield (14-20; 2-2 PCSC) over the weekend. The Roadrunners bounced back from the shutout thrown by Fong by rallying to win Game Two of Sunday's doubleheader 10-7.

"We are starting to get into a groove offensively," said Mize. "We are moving runners over and cashing them in with runs and hitting the long ball is always fun, it pumps the team up."

Powered by two homers and four-RBI from Bronco junior Briana Knight, Santa Clara led Game Two 6-5 before the Roadrunners plated five runs in the seventh to avoid being swept. Knight finished the weekend 7-for-11 (.636 BA) with three homers, a double and six RBI. A returning First Team All-PCSC outfielder, Knight is hitting .429 through 19 games this season with 11 extra-base hits and 16 RBI.

The Broncos are in the midst of a busy stretch of games, which will see the team play six times in the upcoming week, including their home-opener Thursday, April 14 against Oregon State. SCU will then host PCSC rival LMU Saturday and Sunday, April 16-17. 

"We are going to try and build on the weekend," said Mize. "We almost had three of four here and that is encouraging. Playing a lot of games this week will allow us to get a number of different players some playing time. We are off to a decent start in conference and we are going to keep improving."
