SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Solid pitching combined with timely hitting was the recipe for Santa Clara baseball's 9-0 win over UC Davis on Tuesday night's nonconference game.
Santa Clara (4-18) starter Locke Bernhardt threw five hitless innings and along with four relievers combined for a one hit shutout against the Aggies (6-11).
Offensively, the Broncos got 13 base hits and were 8-for-11 with runners in scoring position as six different batters drove in runs led by Cameron Allie's (2-for-5, 3 RBIs) career-high three RBIs.
In his first career start as a Bronco, the junior college transfer allowed three walks and one hit batsman while striking out two. He was pulled in favor of Travis Howard after 67 pitches with the Broncos ahead 4-0.
In the fourth, Santa Clara scored four runs on six hits off Aggies starter Blake Hannah. Matt Jew (1-for-4, RBI), Tony Boetto (1-for-4, RBI), Dawson Brigman (2-for-4, 2 R, 2 RBIs) and Gavin Maloney (2-for-3, 2 R, RBI) each drove in a run. For Maloney, it was his first career hit and RBI for the freshman.
UC Davis (6-11) got its lone hit of the game off Howard on a comebacker by Cooper Morrison (1-for-3) off the pitcher's glove.
The Broncos added three more runs in the sixth to extend its lead to 7-0, on RBI singles by Brigman, Ryan McCarthy (1-for-2, R, RBI) and Allie. Allie would triple home two more runs in the eighth to give the Broncos a 9-0 lead.
Santa Clara relievers Howard, Julian Tristan, Ethan Heinrich and Eric Lex each pitched an inning apiece, striking out seven Aggies while allowing just two walks.
Bernhardt (1-0) earned the win as it snapped Santa Clara's 13-game losing streak. Hannah (1-3) took the loss for the Aggies.
