LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The Santa Clara University men's golf team concluded play at the Herb Wimberley/NMSU Invitational Tuesday afternoon, firing a team score of 298 to finish in 11th place with their three-round total of 894.
Junior Matt Klenz finished in a tie for 17th individually following his final round score of 2-under par, 70, pushing his two day total to 2-over par, 218. Michael Nicoletti finished in a tie for 41st after shooting a 75 on Tuesday while Justin Ahasic carded a 78 on the final day, pushing his total to 227, only two shots behind Nicoletti but good enough for only a tie for 49th place.
Jong Yoon also fired a final round 78 for the Broncos and finished in a tie for 55th place with his tournament total of 230. John Colyar rounded out the SCU scoring with his three-round total of 236, placing him in 62nd place by himself following an 85 on Tuesday.
Wichita State took home first place as they shot a 23-under par 841 (280, 273, 288) while Lamar University finished second with an 11-under 853 (278, 281, 294). The Aggies finished only three strokes behind second place.
Chris Stroud of Lamar won the intercollegiate as he tied a tournament record with a 14-under 202 (67, 64, 71). The score tied a previous record held by NMSU interim head coach and former Aggie golfer Scott Lieberwirth, who set the record back in 1999.
Santa Clara returns to action on March 22-23 at the Western Intercollegiate hosted by San Jose State at the Pasatiempo Golf Course in Santa Cruz, Calif.
