SAN JOSE, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's golf team captured its first team and individual title of the season as senior Justin Ahasic fired a final round 70 to claim Medallist honors while leading the Broncos to a seven shot team victory over USF.
"It is always enjoyable to win your own tournament, but I think this year was a little more special because we were able to overcome some of the struggles we had," said head coach John Kennday. "We still have quite a bit of work to do, but this was a good win for us. Both Justin (Ahasic) and Jong (Yoon) had big rounds when we needed it today."
SCU fired a team round of 296 on Tuesday, giving them a two day total of 895 at the 6,926-yard, par 72 Silver Creek Valley Country Club. San Francisco also posted a 296 in the third round for a three round total of 902, one shot ahead of Cal Poly who made a big run on Tuesday with their team total of 288.
Ahasic's 2-under par, 70 was tied for the second lowest round of the day. The low round on Tuesday was carded by Travis Bertoni of Cal Poly whose four birdies and two eagles led to a tournament low round of 7-under par, 65.
Jong Yoon of Santa Clara had a final round 71 to finish the tournament in a tie for second place at 1-over par. He ties individuals Chris Heintz of UCLA and Justin Madison of San Jose State, who shot rounds of 72 and 70, respectively, for their two-day total of 217.
Blake Lugar's 78 on Tuesday moved his tournament total to 231 for the Broncos, placing him in a tie for 27th place. Michael Nicoletti finished in 31st place with his three round total of 232, four shots ahead of teammate Matt Klenz who finished 38th.
The Broncos also had two individuals playing in the tournament with John Colyar finishing in a tie for 32nd with his total of 233 following a final round 75. Jonathan Edwards finished in a tie for 42nd after a final round 81 gave him a two-day total of 240.
Santa Clara returns to action next Monday and Tuesday at the University of Hawaii Fall Invitational. The tournament will take place at the Turtle Bay Resort on the Island of Ohau.
