MADERA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's golf team is currently in eighth place after two rounds of play at the West Coast Conference Championship at Riverbed Golf Club in Madera.

The Broncos shot a five-over par 293 on the par-72, 7,101-yard layout in the first round, and followed with a 304 in the second run of the course, and finished with a two-round total of 597, 21 strokes over par in the eight-team field. Pepperdine, who has won 11 league championships since 1990, is leading the event, with a seven-under 569, while Saint Mary's and San Francisco are tied for second eight strokes back. Loyola Marymount (580) and San Diego (581) round out the top five.

"We played an OK first round, but we let it get away from us in the second," head coach John Kennaday said. "We lost it on the back nine and played poorly. We have some work to do tomorrow and we'll try to turn it around and see how much ground we can make up."

The Broncos were led by Michael Nicoletti, who is tied for seventh after carding a one-under 143 (74-69). He was one of only eight individuals who carded under-par totals after two rounds. Justin Ahasic is next for the Broncos, tied for 23rd (71-78-149). Matt Klenz is 31st (72-80-152) while Jonathan Edwards is one stroke back at 153 (76-77). Jong Yoon is in 40th place with an 82-84-166.

Dons Robert Frye and Tyler Pitt are first and second, respectively, in the individual competition.

Santa Clara will play the final round tomorrow morning. SCU will conclude the spring season at the U.S. Intercollegiate, hosted by Stanford April 17-18.
