Men’s Tennis Rallies to Defeat Fresno State 4-3

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Storming back from a three point deficit, the Santa Clara men's tennis team rallied to down Fresno State University 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at the Degheri Tennis Center.

With the match result pending on Court 3, sophomore Mikheil Khmiadashvili put the finishing touches on the Broncos' come-from-behind victory with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Fresno State's Eric Komati.

"My forehand worked pretty well," said Khmiadashvili. "I tried to stay on (Komati's) backhand because his backhand was a weaker shot. It turned out to be a win. We got the win and I'm happy about it."

With the win, the Broncos improve their record to 4-2 on the season. Santa Clara will take the courts next Friday and Saturday when they travel to Eugene, Ore. to take on the Ducks from the University of Oregon and the Cornhuskers from the University of Nebraska.

After jumping out to an early lead in doubles play courtesy of a 6-4 victory from Santa Clara's newly assembled duo of Sam Bertram and Ilya Ostinsev, the Bulldogs responded at the No. 3 and No. 1 spots to capture the doubles point.

Transitioning to singles, Fresno State continued to build its overall match lead to 3-0 with straight-set wins on Court 6 and then on Court 5, putting the Broncos in a deep hole. The Bronco veterans provided the heroics.

Khacharyan, the No. 1 singles competitor for Santa Clara, kept the Broncos in the match with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Fresno State's Euan McIntosh. From the get go, Khacharyan had his opponent on the run. The Sochi, Russia native was working his serve and attacking with emphasis, eventually coming away with a victory in the first set. The junior standout kept his rhythm flowing in set number two and put the Broncos on the scoreboard for the first time all afternoon.

"It was a pretty good day for me," said Khacharyan. "I could do a lot of things. I felt the ball from any spot. Pretty much everything was working. That's why I was positive and just going through the match, feeling the court, and feeling that I could beat this guy."

Right next door on Court 2, Osintsev opened up his singles match with a quick 4-1 advantage. Staying composed and placing his shots with precision, the lefty eventually came away with the 6-1 victory in the first set. Fresno State's Adam Glynn regrouped in set number two and knotted the score at 4-4. Osintsev responded and broke serve to regain the lead at 5-4. The senior put away his opponent in the next game.

"I got up early and that helped my confidence a lot," said Osintsev. "First set I played really solid. I didn't miss a lot of balls. I started really well in the second set as well and that helped a lot."

Osintsev's fellow senior teammate, Bertram, defeated Fresno State's Youssef Hassan 7-5, 6-2 to pull the Broncos and Bulldogs into a tie at 3-3. Going back and forth in the first set, Bertram eventually found some breathing room to go up 6-5 and then broke serve to claim the first set. With a tight first set victory under his belt, the Aussie roared to a 6-2 victory in set number two to give Khmiadashvili a chance to clinch the victory.

"It's a pretty good win because we were coming from a two-match losing streak," said Khmiadashvili. "It's a pretty good confidence builder."
