SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Competing against two nationally ranked opponents this weekend, the No. 65 Santa Clara men's tennis team was unable to string together any lasting rhythm and eventually fell to the University of Nebraska and the University of Oregon.
The Broncos battled the Cornhuskers in tightly contested match on Saturday but were overcome 4-3 in the end. The following morning, Santa Clara's upset attempt was thwarted by the Ducks from Oregon by a score of 6-1.
Santa Clara now stands at 4-4 on the season and will look to get on track when they return to the Degheri Tennis Center next weekend. The Broncos will challenge California State University, Sacramento on Saturday at 11 a.m.
Match 1 | Santa Clara University vs. University of Nebraska
Taking the courts on Saturday afternoon, the Broncos jumped to out to an early advantage over the Cornhuskers. Despite a loss on Court 3 in doubles, the recently assembled duo of Ashot Khacharyan and Mikheil Khmiadashvili picked up their first victory together after taking down Nebraska's Bradford Zitsch and Scott Elsass 6-4. Ilya Osintsev and Sam Bertram continued their winning ways in similar fashion, defeating Dusty Boyer and Linus Erhart to claim the doubles point for Santa Clara.
The Cornhuskers regained control of the match in singles with wins on Courts 5, 4 and 6. With one more singles match winner needed, Nebraska's Boyer captured the first set against Ilya Osintsev. The Santa Clara senior battled in the second set but eventually fell 7-5, sealing Nebraska's victory.
After the match decision, Khmiadashvili and Khacharyan each clinched another victory at the singles level. Khmiadashvili came away with a 6-4 victory in the first set and followed suit with a tight 7-6 victory in set number two. The Tbilisi, Georgia native improved to 7-2 on the season and, in the process, picked up his 20th career singles victory wearing the red and white.
Over on Court 1, Khacharyan notched his 12th singles win of the season after downing Marc Hermann in a lengthy match 6-4, 6-7, 11-9.
Match 2 | Santa Clara University vs. University of Oregon
Looking to knock off Oregon for the second consecutive year, the upset minded Broncos came up short this time around.
Playing on their home courts in which they are a perfect 5-0 this season, the Ducks opened up an early advantage by capturing the doubles point.
Oregon continued to increase its lead with straight-set wins on Courts 6 and 1 in singles. On Court 1, Maasland paid back Khacharyan with a 6-2, 6-1 victory. Last year, Khacharyan got the best of Maasland 6-4, 6-4.
Oregon's Simon Stevens overcame Sebastien Mathieu at the No. 5 spot to clinch the victory for the No. 45 ranked Ducks.
The lone bright spot on the day for Santa Clara came on Court 4. Bertram, competing against Jayson Amos for the second straight season, defeated the sophomore Duck 6-4, 6-4. With the victory, the Santa Clara senior now has five wins on the dual match season.
