SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara men's tennis team dropped its first round match at the conference championships against Gonzaga University by a score of 4-0 on Wednesday afternoon, effectively ending the 2014-15 campaign for the Broncos.
Despite rolling to a 4-2 victory over the Bulldogs just last weekend, the Broncos were unable to put forth that same effort in today's West Coast Conference Championship match, giving up the doubles point and falling in three consecutive singles matches.
Santa Clara finishes the year with a record of 9-13 overall and 3-7 in WCC action. After having an up-and-down start to the season, the Broncos finished strong, winning four of their last six matches.
Competing against the Bulldogs, Santa Clara jumped ahead early courtesy of seniors Ilya Osintsev and Sam Bertram. As they have made it a custom over for the past month, the Bronco duo stormed out of the gates and cruised past their opponents to capture a doubles victory. This time around, Osintsev and Bertram routed Hayden Smith and Vladimir Mijatovic by a score of 8-2 to end the season with a team-high 11 doubles victories as well as a team-high six match winning streak.
The early Santa Clara success was short-lived however as Gonzaga roared back on Courts 2 and 3. Michael Standifer and Max Heerinckx fell 8-4 to Gonzaga's Sergio Chip and Joey Brant while Mikheil Khmiadashvili and Ashot Khacharyan were outlasted by a score of 8-6, losing the doubles clincher to Nick Kamisar and Alvaro Nazal in a closely contested match.
With the doubles point secured, the Bulldogs jumped ahead of the Broncos and never looked back. Chip defeated Heerinckx 6-0, 6-2 on Court 5, Mijatovic bested Bertram by the same tally right next door on Court 4, and Smith sealed the deal with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Khmiadashvili at the No. 3 spot.
