SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Broncos travelled south to San Diego, Calif. for two matches this weekend but were unable to pull off an upset against either top-35 opponents from San Diego State University and the University of San Diego. Santa Clara fell 4-0 to the Aztecs on Saturday morning and dropped their match against the Toreros by the same tally the following afternoon.
The losses drop Santa Clara's record to 5-9 overall in the spring and 0-3 in West Coast Conference play. The Broncos will return to action this coming weekend with two matches on their home courts against WCC foes from Loyola Marymount University and Pepperdine University on Saturday and Sunday.
Match 1 | Santa Clara University vs. San Diego State University
The Broncos came out fighting against the No. 35 ranked Aztecs in doubles action, looking to hand San Diego State a second consecutive defeat after thrashing the Aztecs 6-1 last season.
After the first-time doubles pairing of Ashot Khacharyan and Sebastien Mathieu dropped their match, the top two Bronco tandems found themselves in highly-competitive matches with the Aztec duos. Michael Standifer and Max Heerinckx were knotted up 6-6 on Court 2 while the matchup on Court 1 was also locked up in a tie and coming down to the wire. However, the Broncos were unable to capture the advantage in crunch time. San Diego State's No. 65 ranked doubles pairing downed Santa Clara's Ilya Osintsev and Sam Bertram 7-6 (6-2) to capture the first point of the day.
Moving to singles play, the Broncos were unable to keep pace with the high-powered Aztecs. Heerinckx fell in straight-sets on Court 5 and Standifer dropped his contest on Court 6 to put San Diego State on top 3-0.
Henrik Jebens provided the clincher for the Aztecs on Court 3 with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Santa Clara's Bertram.
With the match decision in the books, the three other singles matches were left unfinished. On Court 1, Osintsev had taken the first set 7-6 (3) against Freddy Gelbrich, the No. 111 ranked singles competitor in the nation. Osintsev's Russian teammate, Khacharyan, had also claimed a first set winner by a score of 6-4.
Match 2 | Santa Clara University vs. University of San Diego
Looking to regroup after Saturday's defeat, the Broncos came up short against the 2014 WCC champions from USD on Sunday afternoon.
Opening up doubles play, the Toreros jumped out to an early lead with a 6-0 victory on Court 1 and a 6-1 finish two courts over at the No. 3 position.
With the doubles point secured, USD continued to balloon its advantage over the Broncos in singles. James Ponwith and Alexandros Araouzos downed both Santa Clara's Standifer and Heerinckx by the same score of 6-1, 6-0 on Courts 6 and 5 respectively, sending the overall match decider to the next singles match to be completed.
Ciaran Fitzgerald finished the deal with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Mathieu, Santa Clara's freshman from London, England to give the Toreros their 11th consecutive home victory.
With the match result in the books, Santa Clara's top three singles competitors, Osintsev, Khacharyan, and Bertram, all resigned from action.
