SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara men's tennis team travelled to Utah this weekend for back-to-back matches on Friday and Saturday but was defeated by Weber State University and its conference foe from Brigham Young University, both by a score of 4-2.
The losses drop Santa Clara to 4-7 on the year and 0-2 in West Coast Conference action. The Broncos will now have a two-and-a-half week break before their next match on March 24 when they host Holy Names University.
Despite the losses, senior Ilya Osintsev etched his name in the Santa Clara men's tennis record books courtesy of his performances in singles play. Now with 59 career singles victories while wearing the red and white, Osintsev is tied for ninth place on Santa Clara's all-time singles wins list.
Match 1 | Santa Clara University vs. Weber State University
Taking on the Wildcats from Weber State in a non-conference matchup, the Broncos were defeated 4-2. Playing at the No. 2 position, Osintsev provided one of the Santa Clara points, rallying to defeat Stefan Cooper in three sets. After dropping the first set 4-6, the lefty stormed back to claim the second set 6-3. In the third and final set, the Santa Clara senior came away victorious 3-2(11-9) to tally his 58th career victory, good enough to tie for 10th place on the all-time singles wins list for Santa Clara.
His neighbor on Court 3, Mikheil Khmiadashvili, also came out on top in his singles match. Despite falling in the first set 3-6, the sophomore found his rhythm and downed his Wildcat opponent 6-4, 6-1 in the following sets.
However, those two victories were not enough in the end to help the Broncos steal a victory on the road. The Wildcats clinched four wins at the No. 1, 4, 5 and 6 positions to send the Broncos into Provo, Utah with a loss.
Match 2 | Santa Clara University vs. Brigham Young University
The following evening, the Broncos embarked on their second WCC match of the season but were ultimately outlasted. The Cougars jumped out to an early advantage in doubles, claiming victories on Courts 1 and 3 to go ahead in the opening moments.
Santa Clara managed to bounce back in singles and take a 2-1 lead in the match courtesy of wins from its veteran work horses. Osintsev cruised to a comfortable 6-1, 6-2 over BYU's Andrey Goryachkov, giving him his 59th career singles victory and 9th victory on the year. The 6-foot, 4-inch lefty is now 7-2 in dual matches.
Fellow Russia native Ashot Khacharyan also picked up a victory to get back to his winning ways. Playing on Court 1, the junior responded after a first set defeat to roll his opponent 6-2, 6-1 in sets two and three. Khacharyan is now 13-4 on the year and 6-2 in dual match play.
The two victories were not enough to propel the Broncos to a win as BYU tallied three victories at positions three, four and five.
