Busey Grabs Podium Finish; Three Women’s Golfers Among Top 10 At Fresno State Classic

FRESNO, Calif. – Sophomore Sarah Busey matched the Broncos program record with a 67 in Tuesday's final round of the Fresno State Classic to claim a career-best finish lifting Santa Clara women's golf into third place with a team total of 6-over 870.

One day after compiling the second-lowest 18-hole score in program history, the Broncos fell one swing short of matching Monday's 283. Their final-round 284 gave them a 54-hole total of 870, which is also the program's second-lowest. Both records were set in the fall with a 280 and 863 at the UC Irvine invitational.

The Broncos moved up two more spots on the leaderboard to claim their fifth top-three of the year. The late flurry wasn't enough to overcome UC Davis, which won the tournament by 11 strokes over Grand Canyon with an 856 total.

It was another banner day individually for the Broncos, who got sub-par scores from Busey, sophomore Emily Sumner and freshman Claire Choi for the second straight round.

Busey matched teammate Marni Murez and Annie Freman for the school's 18-hole low while establishing her own 54-hole record at 4-under 212. She moved up seven spots on the individual leaderboard to place solo third, three-shots behind medalist Christine Danielsson of UC Davis.

Two other Broncos placed among the top-10 with Sumner grabbing a share of sixth after a final-round 1-under 71 moved her to even-par 216. It was Sumner's fourth top-10 of the year.

Choi also carded a 71 on Tuesday to vault nine spots up the leaderboard for her second top-10 of the year. She ended in a four-way tie for ninth at 1-over 217 and carded the Broncos only eagle of the tournament on the par-4, 362-yard ninth hole.

Murez placed in a tie for 42nd with her 228 total and freshman Duong Tran had a counting 75 on Tuesday, which moved her into a share of 60th at 234.

Competing as individuals, junior Isabella Seeburger totaled 237 (76-79-82) and freshman Naomi Wong, in her first collegiate tournament, ended at 242 (81-78-83).

The Broncos look to carry some momentum into the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic, which gets underway Monday at the Ak Chin Southern Dunes track in Maricopa, Arizona.
