Matt Lyles Added to Volleyball Staff

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara University head women's volleyball coach Jon Wallace rounded out his coaching staff on Monday when he announced the hiring of former U.S. National Team member Matt Lyles as the team's assistant coach.

The former two-time All-American player at Long Beach State joins the Bronco staff after successful endeavors in private business, high school coaching and a playing career that included both amateur and professional ties.

A 1993 graduate of Long Beach State, Lyles was a member of the 1991 National Championship team. During the 49ers run through the tournament in '91, Lyles played well enough to earn All-Tournament Team honors following the championship game.

Prior to his time at LBSU, Lyles played for one season at Orange Coast College under Wallace who served as an assistant coach. While at OCC Lyles led his team to the State Championship in 1990.

Following his collegiate playing days Lyles played three seasons for the U.S. National Team. In 1991 he helped the Americans to a second place finish at the World University Games in England and a fourth place finish at the Pan-Am Games in Cuba. During the 1993 season he helped the U.S. to a first place finish at the World Championship Qualifier and the second place finish at the Norceca Zone Championships. During his playing days he also found time to serve as a Player Representative for Volleyball Sports Magazine.

From the U.S. National Team he then spent four years playing internationally, including the 1996-97 and 1997-98 seasons for Team Nesselande in Holland where he served as a player/coach. While he was a member of Team Nesselande, he guided the squad to the Dutch Championship in 1998. In addition to his playing time overseas, Lyles also found time to play pro beach volleyball on the AVP Tour from 1996 to 2003.

Lyles begins his stint immediately as the players reported to the Mission Campus last Friday and have already begun practices. The team in preparing for its season opener which will be played at Pacific on Friday, August 29.
