MORAGA, Calif. - The 13th-ranked Santa Clara University women's volleyball team rallied from a 2-1 deficit behind Becky Potter's 23 kills, 21 digs and 14 blocks for a 3-2 victory at Saint Mary's Friday night in Moraga, Calif. With the win the Broncos improve to 18-8 overall and 9-2 in West Coast Conference play while dropping the Gaels to 19-11 overall, 5-7 in league action.
Potter's triple-double was the second of her career, both of which have come this season. Prior to the 2003 campaign there had only been five triple-doubles in program history. She is only the fourth player in Bronco volleyball history to record such a feat.
11 of Potter's 14 blocks were assisted, tying the program record for most block assists in a match, a record that was set earlier this season by Becky Biniek. Her 14 total blocks also tied a program record, matching the mark set by Katie Hunsaker in 1988. Potter's 32.5 points on the night were a match-high by eight points.
Toni Muratore played through nagging injuries and posted 17 kills on the evening while Becky Biniek rounded out the Broncos in double-digit kills with her 11. Kim McGiven provided a much needed spark off the bench, notching eight kills and a .300 hitting percentage in only four games.
Kelli Sousa whose 68 assists were a match-high directed the offense very effectively on the evening. She also chipped in with nine digs and five block assists. Kristen Luxton paced the Bronco defense with her career-high 25 digs while Lexie Bothman added 17 and Alyssa Lantz chipped in with 15.
Jill Parmele led the Saint Mary's offense with her 21 kills while Kaui Salzman posted 14. However, Salzman also had a match-high 17 errors for a -.042 hitting percentage in the match. Mandy Bible notched 65 assists in the match while Stacey O'Connor posted a match-high with her 14 block assists.
Santa Clara returns to action Saturday night at San Francisco. The Broncos will look to extend their current win streak against USF to 29, but will have to do so against a much better Dons team that defeated No. 21 San Diego Friday night in War Memorial Gymnasium by a 3-2 score. First serve Saturday night is slated for 7 p.m.
