Volleyball Wins West Coast Conference Opener

SPOKANE, Wash. - The 16th-ranked Santa Clara University women's volleyball team defeated Gonzaga by a 3-1 score to open West Coast Conference play Friday night in Spokane, Wash. The Broncos improve to 10-5 overall and 1-0 in league play while dropping the Bulldogs to 3-12 overall and 0-1 in conference action.

Senior Becky Potter again led the way for the Broncos as she posted 21 kills and 15 digs on the evening. Sophomore Toni Muratore registered 17 kills, seven digs and four block assists in the league opener. Both Potter and Muratore had tremendous hitting percentages with Potter hitting at a .462 clip and Muratore at a .438 pecentage.

Senior setter Kelli Sousa guided the Bronco offense with her 53 assists while sophomore Cassie Perret chipped in whit her 10 kills and team-high 16 digs. Alyssa Lantz added six kills and 10 digs while Becky Biniek chipped in with her seven kills and a match-high five block assists on the evening.

As a team SCU had 18 more kills and 11 less erros that the Bulldogs, leading to a hitting percentage that was 87 points better than Gonzaga's. The win for the Broncos was their 17th in a row over the Bulldogs, a streak that dates back to November 5, 1994.

Christina Davis' 14 kills led three Gonzaga players in double-digit kills as Abby Cullen ended with 12 and Lauren Armas ended with 11. Heather Signor posted a match-high 18 digs in the loss.

Santa Clara will return to action on Saturday night as they travel to Oregon to take on the University of Portland at 7 p.m. tomorrow evening. Gonzaga will take on No. 19 San Diego, who defeated Portland in three games on Friday night, at 7 p.m. in the Martin Center.
