SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's volleyball team rode the back of All-American Becky Potter to a 3-2 victory over Sacramento State Tuesday night at the Hornets Nest in Sacramento. The win improved the Broncos' record to 9-5 overall while dropping the Hornets to 9-7 on the season.
Potter proved why she was an All-American last year with her 23 kills and career-high 20 digs in the five game thriller. She becomes one of only 10 players in Santa Clara history to post 20 kills and 20 digs in the same night. Additionally she moved into the number two spot all-time in career kills on the night, as her 23 kills gave her 1,501 for her career, passing Lia Young's 1,496. She trails only Ynez Carrasco who posted 1,748 kills in her four-year career.
"Becky Potter did what All-Americans do," said head coach Jon Wallace, "she carried our team tonight. Also, I think that having Toni Muratore back at full strength and taking good swings allows Potter to have more openings to hit through."
With the win, Wallace picked up his 100th career win at Santa Clara, attaining the mark in only his fifth year at the helm. He trails only Mary Ellen Murchison by 68 wins for the all-time win record in SCU volleyball history.
Muratore added 20 kills on the night to go along with four digs and four block assists. Alyssa Lantz chipped in with 12 kills and nine digs while Becky Biniek added 12 kills of her own.
Kelli Sousa guide the offense with her 67 assists and 10 digs while Cassie Perret notched nine kills and 12 digs. Sophomores Lexie Bothman and Kristen Luxton each added 10 digs in the victory.
Sandra Bandimere led the Hornets with her 18 kills but 12 attack errors and five service errors proved costly. Emily Wilson played an outstanding match with her 15 kills and matchhigh 12 total blocks.
Santa Clara returns to action this weekend as West Coast Conference play begins in the Pacific Northwest. The Broncos will open league play on Friday night at Gonzaga before taking on Portland Saturday evening. Both matches are slated to begin at 7 p.m.
