Becky Potter Named WCC Co-Player of the Week

Sept. 8, 2003

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara University middle blocker Becky Potter was named the West Coast Conference Volleyball Co-Player of the Week on Monday following her MVP performance at the Wildcat Invitational in Tucson, Ariz.

The senior from Clovis, Calif., guided the Broncos to four victories over the weekend including a 3-1 victory over then No. 10 Arizona and a 3-2 victory over Miami, who was a sweet 16 team in 2002. The victory over Miami gave Santa Clara the tournament title as they also registered wins over Rhode Island and San Diego State.

Potter posted 71 kills and a .351 hitting percentage in the four matches to go along with 47 digs and 14 blocks. In the first match against No. 10 Arizona, Potter posted 20 kills, nine digs and four blocks. Her biggest output of the weekend came in the thrilling 3-2 victory over San Diego State as she tallied 26 kills, seven digs and five blocks.

The tournament most valuable player honor is her third in the last two seasons as she captured the NAU Fiesta Bowl Classic and UC Irvine Sunset Showcase MVP honors in 2002.

Loyola Marymount middle blocker Dina DeBernardi shares the honor with Potter after leading the Lions to a perfect 4-0 record on the week that included a 3-1 victory over then No. 7 UC Santa Barbara. In that match against the Gauchos she recorded 23 kills with no errors on only 36 attempts for a .639 hitting percentage. She finished the week with 56 kills, nine digs and six blocks.

Potter and the Broncos return to action this weekend for perhaps the toughest stretch of matches this year. SCU will take on No. 5 Nebraska on Friday evening, No. 10 Georgia Tech on Saturday and No. 17 Michigan State on Sunday. All three matches are part of the U.S. Bank/Arby's Invitational hosted by Nebraska.
