Volleyball Falls In Season Opener to Washington State; Plays Host-Seattle Later

The Santa Clara volleyball team opened the 2011 season with a 3-1 loss to the Pac-12s Washington State this afternoon in Seattle, Wash.  The game scores were 27-25, 26-24, 17-25 and 20-25. Santa Clara plays Seattle this evening at 7 pm.

"We had 11 service errors and 11 reception errors - that's almost a whole game.  We need to get that turned around tonight.  Our passing really hurt us this afternoon. The Cougars served and passed really well - they were better than us today," said Bronco head coach Jon Wallace.  "Kat attacked well and Alexandra set the ball really well.  It's all about turning it around tonight.  It's Seattle's evening opener so we have to play mentally tough and compete."

Santa Clara hit .247 with 61 kills (25 e, 146 att.).  The Broncos added 50 digs, 55 assists, three service aces and three team blocks.  Washington State hit .331 with 52 kills (13 e, 118 att.).  The Cougars added 53 digs, 47 assists, 11 aces and 13 team blocks. 

Individually, Santa Clara's Katherine Douglas led the team with 16 kills, hitting .400 with eight digs and six reception errors.  Kayla Lommori collected 13 kills, hitting .229 with 11 digs and Tanya Schmidt scored 12 kills, hitting .381 with one block assist and two digs.  Dana Knudsen had eight kills, hitting .316.  Alexandra Palmer had 43 assists and 10 digs for her first double-double of the season.  She also hit .667 with two kills. Libero Bridget O'Hara had seven digs.

Washington State was led by Megan Ganzer's 21 kills, hitting .366 and Rachel Todorovich had 14 kills, hitting .414 with a match-high 14 digs.  Marcelina Glab had eight block assists and seven kills.  Setter Camryn Irwin had 45 assists and 13 digs.

The Broncos hit .316 in the first set, .245 in the second, .167 in the third and .241 in the fourth.  The Cougars hit .250 in the first set, .308 in the second, .435 in the third and .357 in the fourth.
