Volleyball Falls in Four to Utah Valley State

Santa Clara dropped its final match of the weekend to host-Utah Valley State by a score of 3-1.  Set scores were 20-25,  25-21, 21-25 and 22-25.  Santa Clara is 3-3 and Utah Valley is 5-1.

Alexandra Palmer was named to the Utah Valley State All-Tournament team.

"Right from the start Utah Valley had some great energy. We seemed to be amped up for the game and ready, but they put us on our heels all night.  We were kind of following them all night.  We could score two straight, but we couldn't seem to score four or more in a row.  We always came back and applied great pressure and played with heart.  We missed Kaleigh Durket out there - we missed her energy and spirit (out with a sprained ankle)," said Bronco head coach Jon Wallace.  "Utah Valley played really well and we just couldn't get the tide to turn in our behalf."

Santa Clara hit .250 with 62 kills (29 e, 132 att.).  The Broncos added 39 digs, 61 assists, six service aces and five team blocks.  Utah Valley hit .293 with 52 kills (18 e, 116 att.).  UVU added 34 digs, 50 assists, five aces and 12 team blocks. 

Individually, Santa Clara was led by Tanya Schmidt's 17 kills. She hit .727.  Katherine Douglas scored 16 kills, hitting .345.  Taylor Milton and Dana Knudsen both had seven kills.  Kayla Lommori added nine kills and Megan Anders hit .833 with five kills in six attempts.  Bridget O'Hara had 13 digs.  Alyssa Anderson had 33 assists and three aces.  Palmer had 24 assists and five digs.

Jaicee Kuresa led the Utah Valley attack with 15 kills, hitting .433.  Erica Nish had 11 and Chelsey Heaps had 11.  Patti Flagg scored 11 digs.  

Utah Valley won set one 25-20.  Tied up twice in the early going, Utah Valley took a 13-6 lead quickly. Timeout Broncos.  Utah Valley took an 18-13 lead.  The Broncos scored three of the next five points to make it 20-16 Utah Valley.  Timeout Utah Valley.  They returned to the court to score two straight before Santa Clara whistled for timeout.  Dana Knudsen crushed the ball and then Megan Anders and Tanya Schmidt picked up a team block to make it 22-18.  A kill by Jaicee Kuresa was matched by one by Schmidt, 23-19 Utah Valley.  Two straight kills by Erica Nish gave UVU the set.   Santa Clara hit .143 with 12 kills.  Douglas had four kills.  Utah Valley hit .194 with 12 kills with four hitters scoring three kills each.

Santa Clara won set two despite trailing 14-9.  In set two UVU went up 9-3 before scored five of the next eight points to make it 11-8 Utah Valley.  Utah Valley went up 14-9 and then 16-11 before the Broncos started to rally, tying it up 18-18 on an ace by Alyssa Anderson and took the lead 20-18 on kills by Schmidt and Douglas.  Milton made it 21-19 with a kill.  Schmidt's kill made it 23-20 Broncos, but Nish scored on a kill to the back-row to pull UVU within two.  An attack error by Brookelyn Campbell and a dump by Anderson gave Santa Clara set two.  Santa Clara 20 kills, hitting .385 .  Utah Valley had 13 kills, hitting .310.  Douglas had six kills in the set.

Utah Valley won set three 25-21.  Santa Clara jumped out to a 4-1 lead courtesy of a UVU error, a kill by Schmidt and two Anderson aces.  The two teams then tied it up six times with Schmidt's kill, her 13th of the match, putting the Broncos up 14-13.  Lindsay Barker's kill tied up the set for the seventh time, but Milton's own made it 15-14 Broncos.  Timeout Utah Valley.  A kill by Ali Rambis put the Broncos up 16-14.  UVU scored three straight to take a 17-16 lead when SCU called for time.  UVU scored two more before Lommori's kill and a UVU attack error made it 19-18 UVU.  Milton's serve bounced out of bounds to put UVU back up by two, 20-18.  Lommori pushed the ball to the back row for a point, but Utah Valley scored two to make Santa Clara to call its second timeout of the set.  A kill by Knudsen in the middle was followed by one by Jaicee Kuresa and then one by Schmidt made it 23-21 Utah Valley.  Kills by Kuresa and Barker closed out the set for Utah Valley, 25-21.  Santa Clara hit .179 with 13 kills. Utah Valley hit .259 with 12 kills. 

Utah Valley won set four.  Schmidt picked up two kills in the early going and Douglas scored on an ace to put the Broncos up 3-2. Utah Valley went on a 7-1 run to take a 9-4 lead.  Santa Clara rallied to score five of the next six points, including the last two on kills by Douglas and Schmidt.  Milton's kill brought the Broncos within one, but three straight kills by Utah Valley put UVU up three, 14-10.  A team block by Schmidt and Milton once again stopped the rally.  Rambis' ace and a kill by Lommori brought SCU within one, 14-13 UVU.  Nish's kill made it a two-point lead again.  A media timeout was followed by a Bronco error and a UVU team block.  With Utah Valley up 17-13, Santa Clara called timeout.  Knudsen and Lommori scored but Sarah Clement's kill pushed the lead back to three, 18-15 UVU. Back and forth play continued with the team's trading points.  A UVU team block was followed by a Douglas kill, a UVU error and a Megan Anders kill to pull the Broncos within one.  Timeout Utah Valley.  A kill by Clement followed an ace by Patti Flagg. Timeout Santa Clara.  Two Douglas kills were sandwiched between a UVU kill.  UVU won two of the next three points to win the set 25-22.  Santa Clara hit .243 with 17 kills.  Utah Valley hit .414 with the 15 kills.
