Volleyball Defeats Gonzaga in Four

Santa Clara won its second straight West Coast Conference match on the road to defeat Gonzaga 3-1 Saturday afternoon.  Set scores were 25-22, 23-25, 25-23 and 25-15.  The Broncos move to 7-7 and 2-1 in the WCC. Gonzaga falls to 6-9 and 1-4 in the WCC.

"Game three was a battle, but we hung in there and came back and won game four. I was really happy with our toughness," said Bronco head coach Jon Wallace.  "Our offense showed balance numbers. They tried to take out our middles, but Dana played really well and so did Kaleigh. Our setters did a really good job of making good choices all day long.  Alexandra played at a really high level and also played good defense. Alyssa basically won set one with her service. She went on a five-six point run that took us three down to two or three up.  I was really pleased with our effort. Our effort was great."

Santa Clara hit .210 with 68 kills (31e, 176 att.).  They collected 63 assists, 80 digs, four team blocks and two aces (with eight service errors).  Santa Clara was led by five players who had 10+ kills.  Katherine Douglas had 16 kills with 10 digs.  Kayla Lommori and Taylor Milton both collected 11 kills.  Kaleigh Durket and Tanya Schmidt had 10 kills each.  Milton collected 14 digs.  Alyssa Anderson had 37 assists and Alexandra Palmer had 22.  Bridget O'Hara had 23 digs.  Dana Knudsen had nine kills, hitting .471.

Gonzaga hit .143 with 43 kills (21 e, 154 att.).  They collected 39 assists, 63 digs and 15 team blocks.  Individually the Zags were led by Hannah Deede who had 14 kills, hitting .216.  Meridith Crenshaw collected 11 blocks assists.  Laura Day had six kills and 13 digs.  Kennedy Wesley had 14 digs.  Denise van de Mortel collected 33 assists.

Santa Clara won the first set 25-22.  After being tied twice Gonzaga took an early 6-3 lead.  The Broncos tied it up at 8-8 and then took an 11-8 before the Bulldogs called for time.  The Broncos knotched two more points on kills by Durket and Douglas and then took a 14-10 lead on a kill by Schmidt.  SCU took a 20-16 lead on a Zags service error.  Gonzaga pulled within two on a kill by Day, 22-20 Broncos. Santa Clara won three of the next five points to win the set 25-22 on a kill by Knudsen.  Santa Clara hit .229 with 19 kills (8e, 48 att.) in the first set. Gonzaga hit .265 with 11 kills (2e, 34 att.). 

Gonzaga won set two 25-23.  Tied once, the Zags ran out to an 8-3 lead and then went up 10-6.  Down 11-7, the Broncos slugged back to score three straight on a kill by Douglas, an attack error by Hannah Deede and an ace by Anderson.  Schmidt's kill brought SCU within one at 12-11 Zags.  The Broncos went up 13-12 when Gonzaga whistled for time.  The team was tied eight times, including 17-17 on a kill to the back row by Kayla Lommori and then at 18-18 on a kill by Deede.  Durket's kill down the line made it 19-19, but the Zags went up 21-20 on another Day kill.  Durket tied it 21-21 and Day crushed another kill to make it 22-21 Zags. The Zags scored two more and Wallace then called for time, down 24-22.  Santa Clara pulled within one by Taylor, but Kaprina Goodwin won the set on a kill to the back row, 25-23.  Santa Clara hit .244 with 18 kills (7e, 45att.) in the second set. Gonzaga hit .261 with 15 kills (3e, 46 att.). 

Santa Clara won the third set 25-15.  The Broncos took a 6-2 lead before Gonzaga whistled for time.  The Broncos took an 11-5 lead on back-to-back kills by Douglas and Durket.  Gonzaga scored seven of the next eight points to it up 12-12.  The teams tied it up four more times and the Zags went up one, 17-16, on an attack error by Douglas.  Gonzaga went up three on an attack error by Lommori and a kill by Day.  Santa Clara tied it up 21-21 on a kill by Douglas. Timeout Gonzaga.  After Douglas' attack error made it 23-21 Zags, Schmidt, Lommori, Taylor and Lommori all four crushed the ball for kills and just like that Santa Clara won set three 25-23.  Santa Clara hit .128 with 16 kills (10e, 47att.) in the second set. Gonzaga hit .108 with 10 kills (6e, 37 att.). 

Santa Clara won the fourth set 25-15.  The Broncos roared out to an 8-1 lead before the Zags whistled for timeout.  Schmidt's kill made it 8-2.  The Broncos took a 17=7 lead on two straight Zags errors.  A kill by Knudsen made it 22-12.  Back-to-back kills by Durket and Douglas gave the Broncos a 25-15 fourth set win.  Santa Clara hit .250 with 15 kills (6e, 36att.) in the second set. Gonzaga hit -.081 with 7 kills (10e, 37 att.).
