Volleyball Falls in Five to Saint Mary's

Battling the entire match, Santa Clara fell in five sets at Saint Mary's Saturday night.  Set scores were 25-27, 16-25, 25-18, 25-11 and 15-12.  Santa Clara is 7-11 and 2-5 in the WCC. Saint Mary's is 9-11 and 3-5 in the WCC.

Santa Clara returns home for three straight vs. Oct. 20, LMU, Oct. 22, USF and Oct. 29, BYU.

Santa Clara hit .162, collecting 51 kills (27e, 148 att.).  Santa Clara collected 57 digs, 49 assists, six service aces, seven service errors and nine team blocks.  Saint Mary's hit .285, collecting 60 kills (19e, 144 att.).  Saint Mary's collected 60 digs, 56 assists, seven service aces, five service errors and 16 team blocks. 

Individually Santa Clara was led by freshman Taylor Milton's 13 kills and 10 digs, hitting .333.  Katherine Douglas had 10 kills and 11 digs.  Kayla Lommori had 10 kills, hitting .292.   Alyssa Anderson scored 20 assists and six digs.  Alexandra Palmer had 26 assists and eight digs.  Bridget O'Hara had 10 digs.

Saint Mary's was led by Samantha Tinsley's 17 kills and eight digs.  Sarah Reams collected 22 digs.  Gabby Jolly had 16 kills, hitting .400 with nine block assists and a block solo. Lauren Corp had 11 kills and 14 digs.  Missy White had 45 assists and 11 digs.

Santa Clara won set one 27-25. After the Broncos led for most of the set, SMC tied things up at 24 and 25 before SCU scored two more points for the 27-25 win. Santa Clara collected eight kills (7e, 33att.), hitting .030. Saint Mary's scored 11 kills (6e, 32att.), hitting .156.    

Santa Clara won set two 25-16.  Santa Clara collected 13 kills (4e, 29 att.), hitting .310. Saint Mary's collected 10 kills (9e, 31 att.), hitting .023. 

Saint Mary's won set three 25-18.  As a team, the Gaels had an astonishing .500 hitting percentage in the third set, while Tinsley had six kills on 10 swings. Jolly was also huge at the net for Saint Mary's in the set, posting four block assists to lead the Gaels to a 25-18 win.  Santa Clara collected 12 kills (7e, 30 att.), hitting .167.  Saint Mary's collected 14 kills (1e, 26 att.), hitting .500.

Saint Mary's won the fourth set 25-11.   Santa Clara hit .059 with nine kills (7e, 34 att.).  Saint Mary's hit .438 with 14 kills (0e, 32 att.). 

Saint Mary's won the fifth set 15-12. The fifth set was tight the entire way with eight ties and three lead changes. Neither team could break away in the first half of the set, as the Gaels led 8-7 when the team's switched sides. Saint Mary's got their first two-point lead when they went up 11-9 on a kill by Jolly. The Gaels then took a 14-11 lead on Tinsley's 17th kill but Santa Clara got a point on Taylor Milton's team-leading 13th kill of the match. Santa Clara hit .318 with nine kills (2e, 22 att.).  Saint Mary's hit .348 with 11 kills (3e, 23 att.).
