Playing its second fifth-set match in a matter of hours Saturday, Santa Clara defeated SMU in five sets to finish the Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational with a 2-1 record.  The set scores were 22-25, 27-25, 25-20, 19-25 and 15-12.  The Broncos are now 5-6.

Katherine Douglas and Kaleigh Durket were both named to the Texas Invitational All-Tournament team.  Douglas scored 3.38 kills per set, hitting .265 with 2.23 digs per set.  Durket hit .321, scoring 3.08 kills per set and 2.23 digs per set.

Santa Clara opens up its 2011 West Coast Conference slate with No. 17 San Diego, the WCC's defending champion, next Saturday, Sept. 24 at 1 pm at the Leavey Center on the Mission Campus.

Bronco head coach Jon Wallace shook off playing and winning two five-set matches today.  "It wasn't that hard, by the time we got to the fourth set in the second match, we really got going. We made some plays we don't normally make with our feet and that was big. In the fifth set we were up pretty big and the team was still strong, playing really hard and didn't look fatigued," said Wallace. "The fourth game we got in a rut about half-way through where we gave them four or five points and we weren't able to come back. I felt we were the better team and being able to reset and play game five was good for us.  Playing a fifth set earlier in the day, the girls knew how they wanted to play in this second five-set match this afternoon and they played really well.  They showed poise."

"Kat played great. Kat was very aggressive and she did everything for us: passing, serving, hitting.  Kaleigh also had really good day, games one through four she was really solid and unstoppable for us. Katy played solid defense for us and was good in serve-receive."

Running the 6-2 got the Broncos through the weekend, but Wallace said they may make changes next week. "We will look at that early this week.  It does come down to the girls playing better volleyball and it's not the system (meaning 6-2)," said Wallace. "We were probably called on three or four overlaps this weekend. The reason we went to it so we could keep Taylor Milton on the court for all six rotations and it worked out really well for the team."

Wallace is looking forward to starting WCC play next weekend at home with San Diego.  "We are happy to get through the preseason. We have our work cut out for us with the league's No. 1 team coming to the Leavey Center to start it off next Saturday. This weekend helped with our goals and our confidence and our goals going into next week."

The Broncos hit .234 with 79 kills (31e, 205 att.).  They collected 77 assists, seven aces, 90 digs and three team blocks.  The Mustangs hit .224 with 58 kills (19e, 174 att.).  They collected 56 assists, six aces, 76 digs and 15 team blocks. 

Individually Katherine Douglas scored 24 kills (4e, 58 att.), hitting .345.  Kaleigh Durket followed up with 18 kills (9e, 41 att.), hitting .220.  Taylor Milton scored 14 kills (4e, 41 att.), hitting .244. The setters continued to work hard at the 6-2 offense: Alyssa Anderson had 37 assists and 14 digs and Alexandra Palmer had 27 assists and digs.  Katy Schatzman, starting for the first time in her Bronco career at libero, had a career-high 21 digs and five assists. "Katy played really solid for us today," added Wallace.

SMU had four hitters with double-digit kills: Caroline Young had 15, Courtney Manning had 11 and Dana Powell and Jessica Oliver both had 10.  Sidney Stewart collected 18 digs.  Kendrick Koch had 32 assists and Kelli Becerra collected 23.

SMU won the first set 25-22.  The Broncos ran out to a 5-1 lead and then went ahead 12-7 on a Mustang error.  SMU scored four straight to tie it up. Two back-to-back kills by Douglas gave the Broncos a 14-12 lead.  The Mustangs scored five straight to take a 17-14, but Anderson's dump got the side out for the Broncos.  SMU scored two, then the Broncos scored two.  A kill by Jessica Oliver made it 20-17.  Back-to-back Durket kills, followed by one by Douglas tied it up 21-21.  SMU scored four of the next six points to win the first set 25-22.  Santa Clara knocked down 16 kills (8e, 44att.), hitting .182.  SMU collected 9 kills (3e, 28 att.), hitting .214.

Santa Clara won the second set 27-25.  SMU got out quick and jumped out to a 6-1 lead and then went ahead 13-7.  Down 20-16, Wallace whistled for time and then Santa Clara scored five straight points to take a 21-20 lead.  The run included kills by Durket and three by Douglas.  Anderson's ace tied it up 20-20. A kill by Durket gave them a 22-21 lead and then SMU tied it up 22-22 before Douglas' kill made it 23-22.  A kill by Courtney Manning tied it up again.  Another kill by Douglas put the Broncos.  Dana Powell tied it up 24-24, but Milton answered by scoring for the Broncos with a kill to the back row, 25-24 Broncos.  Milton's service error tied it up again.  Durket finished the set with two straight kills to give the Broncos a 27-25 second set victory.  Santa Clara picked up 17 kills (8e, 41 att.), hitting .220.  SMU had 13 kills (4e, 39 att.), hitting .231.

Santa Clara won the fifth set 15-12.  Manning had a kill to start set five.  The Broncos laced together four straight kills on the arms of Douglas, Milton and two back-to-back by Schmidt. After a Young score, Douglas answered, 5-2 Broncos.  Young answered again, but Lommori's kill gave SMU a side-out 6-3.  Palmer's service error was followed by a Milton kill, 7-4 Broncos.  Oliver and Lommori traded kills, 8-5 SCU.  Two Mustang attack errors by Oliver and Manning and SMU whistle for time with the Broncos ahead 10-5.  Milton scored coming out of the Mustang timeout to put SCU up 11-5. A Katy Schatzman service error turned the ball over.  Durket and No. 6 scored on back-to-back kills to put SCU up 11-8. Timeout SMU. A Douglas kill was followed by two Bronco errors to make it 12-10 Broncos.  After a Douglas kill, Young scored back-to-back kills to make it a one-point game, 13-12 Broncos. Timeout Santa Clara. Milton busted it down to the Mustang floor and then Lommori finished off the set with a kill, 15-12 Broncos.  Santa Clara collected 13 kills (2e, 28att.), hitting .393.  SMU had 7 kills (2e, 18att.), hitting .278.
