Playing For Just Second Time in School History, Broncos Fall 3-0 at BYU

PROVO, Utah—Playing BYU for just the second time in school history and the first time as West Coast Conference mates, Santa Clara lost 3-0 on Thursday night at BYU (25-14, 25-19, 25-13).  Santa Clara plays at USF on Saturday at 1 pm.

 "I was disappointed with the way we played and I think the team would say the same thing. We have a very short turnaround with USF at 1 pm in San Francisco on Saturday, but I am confident we will be ready," Bronco head coach Jon Wallace.

Santa Clara hit .029 with 31 kills (28e, 103 att.). They collected 31 assists, 29 digs, two aces and three team blocks.  BYU hit .400 with 42 kills (8e, 85 att.). They collected 40 assists, three aces, 36 digs and 11 team blocks.

Dana Knudsen led the Broncos with eight kills, hitting .235.  Tanya Schmidt collected seven, hitting .267.  Alexandra Palmer had 16 assists and Alyssa Anderson 14.  Bridget O'Hara led the team with nine digs.

Jennifer Hamson led the Cougars with her seventh double-double of the season, posting 13 kills and 12 digs.  Carpenter recorded 10 kills on the match and LeCheminant also broke her career record in block assists, with 8.

Although Santa Clara (7-8, 2-2) marked the first point of the match, BYU (14-4, 3-1) took control from the beginning, eventually sparking a 12-4 run, which finished with a score of 19-9 for the Cougars.  The Cougars finished the first set with a 4-1 run to win 25-14.  Santa Clara hit .132 with 12 kills (7e, 38att.).  BYU hit .452 with 15 kills (1e, 31att.).

The second set was a battle that saw four tied scores early on.  Battling back and forth for most of the set, BYU only once gave up the lead. Tied at 12, a kill from Jennifer Hamson sparked a 6-2 Cougar run that the Broncos were never able to recover from.  Katie Vaughn's kill closed out the match at 25-19 BYU.  Santa Clara hit .000 with 11 kills (11e, 29att.).  BYU hit .296 with 13 kills (5e, 27att).

BYU was able to carry over the momentum from the second set into the third, beginning with an 8-3 run that was sparked by two kills from Christie Carpenter.  Down 13-9, the Cougars answered back with a 8-0 run.  Calling three time-outs within the run, the Broncos answered with their own 4-1 run, but it wasn't enough to stop BYU's momentum. Kathryn Lecheminant's kill finished off the set and match, 25-13.  Santa Clara hit -.056 with eight kills (10e, 36att.).  BYU hit .444 with 14 kills (2e, 27 att.).
